Mary-Lou Orliyarli Divilli, 'Lilly Pad Lauren'
60 x 40 cm
Hahnemuhle Cotton Rag
Edition 1/5 + 2AP
$850
This portrait portrays Mary Lou’s children and family in her signature style, embodying both strength and fragility. She takes control of the narratives surrounding life and growing up in a remote community, capturing a moment in time—for both the subject and the natural environment—reflecting the shifting nature of adolescence and the ever-changing landscape.
Nothing is constant. Yet within this flux lies an infinite well of inspiration and nurture. A raw, unfiltered depiction, shaped by a lifetime of watching the sun rise and set on Country, embracing the light, the dark, and everything in between.
Mary-Lou Orliyarli Divilli (b. 1987) is a Nyikina, Nyul Nyul, Yawuru and Ngarinyin artist living in Kupungarri Community on the Gibb River Road. Her practice is deeply tied to culture, Country, and identity, drawing strength from her children and the natural environment. Creating art is both a means of cultural learning and a process of healing, helping her navigate grief, trauma, and transformation.
Her work explores themes of healing, food and sustainability, and keeping culture strong, often reflecting on the protective and nurturing role of Country. She brings forward delicate yet powerful narratives of childhood, adolescence, and cultural resilience, balancing tradition with the complexities of contemporary life. As a mother and cultural educator, she continues the legacy of her own mother by teaching her children—and others—to walk confidently in two worlds.
Divilli’s practice resonates with both personal connection and universal themes, evoking tranquillity while confronting layered realities of remote community life. Her work has been recognised nationally, including as Winner of the Kimberley Art and Photographic Prize 2025, Finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize (2025), Semi-finalist in Contemporary Landscapes in Photography at the Perth Centre of Photography (2023), and participation in major group exhibitions such as Collective (2024, Perth Centre of Photography), QV1 See My World (2024), and The Alternative Archive, touring with Art on the Move (2022– 24).
