The Exposure Collective have been selected to represent the Perth Centre for Photography at Rotterdam Photo in 2020, with their exhibition, RECLAIMED.

RECLAIMED highlights the ubiquitous nature of photography and the continued significance of self-representation amongst First Nations artists in Australia. The exhibition features contemporary portraiture presented alongside inherited cultural narratives by artists from the Exposure Collective, which is comprised of First Nations Artists from remote communities across Western Australia.

The exhibition offers a counter-voice to the historical misrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, a practiced continued today by the mainstream media. Together, these works speak to hope, autonomy, resilience and cultural inheritance, challenging the narrative that has been shared with world about Indigenous Australia in the past and in the here and now.

The Exposure Collective first came together to participate in EXPOSURE: New Voices in Western Australian Photography Program in 2018. EXPOSURE is a partnership initiative between Yamatji, Nyoongar curator Glenn Iseger-Pilkington (GEE Consultancy), Perth Centre for Photography and remote WA art centres to provide skills development, mentoring, professional opportunities and network development for emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander photographers from Western Australia.

EXPOSURE COLLECTIVE: Clayton Cherel, Justina Clement, Maria Fredricks, Shirley Nuria Jadai, Maria Maraltdj, Went Nanji, Kristabell Porter, Ignatius Taylor, Cecilia Umbagai, Corbin Williams, Tegan Riley
