Internships

The Perth Centre for Photography Internship program is an opportunity to learn how exhibitions are put together and to gain experience in the day-to-day functioning of an art gallery from the inside, and to work with professional curators and artists.

Attendance and punctuality are essential to PCP’s internship program. Internships are open to 3rd or 4th year Tertiary Education Students or recent graduates. The application process is competitive and there will be an interview component.

Students are typically asked to take the internship program for two credits and play two roles: Attendant/Host and Preparator/Publicity. Students should expect to commit five hours per week to the program.

Attendant/Host

Each student who signs up for the program is required to be present to attend the gallery for one 6 hour shift per week during the semester OR help host openings and artist talks. Attendant shifts are scheduled during gallery hours, 10 am – 4 pm, Wed. – Sat, while hosting positions are various hours usually lasting 1 – 4 hours.

Preparator/Publicity

Additionally, each intern takes on one specialised position. These positions are scheduled flexibly, but do require students to be present for hours during installation periods and at scheduled meetings.

Preparators will be installing exhibitions for approximately 5-hour shifts before each of five exhibitions. You will be hanging work, painting, organizing, making gallery materials, working with professional and student artists and curators, and will gain valuable hands-on experience. You will be trained in the use of basic tools used to install exhibitions. No experience required.

Publicity interns help prepare PR materials, publicise events, document exhibitions, enter exhibition descriptions into online arts calendars, contact local arts media, prepare content for our website and social media.
