Artist Statement / Description of artwork
"Resilience" conveys the profound way individuals come to terms with natural disasters and personal loss. Captured 13 years after Japan's 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, the image features a lone pine tree—the sole plant to survive the tsunami—standing beside the untouched ruins of a building. This enduring tree symbolises the strength required to face immense loss and continue forward. Through this photograph, the artist reflects on quiet resilience, honouring both the memory of those lost and the spirit of those who endure. The image invites viewers to find strength in remembrance and to embrace the hope that enables emotional and physical rebuilding after tragedy.
