Bio
Christopher Allery is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. Allery uses photography to capture the atmosphere associated with sites of personal significance. Connection with individuals who populate these spaces has provided Allery with rich opportunities for improvisation. and conversation. Making images which communicate a range of ambiguities has provided Allery with the opportunity to contemplate among other themes: queer identity, religion, spirituality, and the environmental footprint of the individual and their relationship to the greater world community.
Influenced by his experiences in South East Queensland, a place where street lights are sparse and there is minimal light pollution. It is in these ‘imagined spaces’ on the edge of suburban, small town life that the conceptual geography for Allery’s practice was initially formed and continues to develop. A terrain which layers fact with fiction. Where fears and desires bleed into, ’otherness’.
Allery has a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film Production) from the Queensland University of Technology. He was a finalist in the Percival Photographic Portraiture Prize and the Clip Award for Photographic Contemporary Landscape in 2024.
Statement
This image of the Ocimum tenuiflorum captured using a macro lens and enhanced through digital post-processing responds to the anxieties surrounding current world events. What if we destroyed the Earth? We often assume the world would end with us, but in reality, it would endure. Life, especially plant life, would flourish in our absence. Botanical flora would reclaim the planet, their quiet resilience and long evolved strategies finally asserting dominance.
