Bio
Lucas Leo Catalano (b.1985), photographer and artist of multinational heritage based between Indonesia, Italy, and Australia. Producing work within the genre of documentary and reportage photography while breaking tradition by answering questions regarding 'who, what, when, where, and why?' only after the subjective premise is made - if at all. First photographing during teenage years to then intern at the photojournalism agency GraffitiPress (2010), followed by a masters degree in Visual Communications at the Istituto Europeo di Design (2013). Graduating into spot and community news photography in South East Asia and Oceania(2015) until starting a full-time contemporary arts practice using the photographic medium (2022). Shortlisted at the Australian PhotoCollective Documentary Awards, Australasian Photobook Dummy Awards, and Contemporary Landscapes in Photograpy Prize. Nominated for the Sovereign Asian Arts Fund and Harry Gruyaert’s Trieste Photofestival grant.
Statement
Preman' refers to a term for Indonesian organised crime groups, including those in Bali. Taken from the label "free man", they range from common street thugs to organised crime sydicates. Most are agnostic but some have incorporated spiritual beliefs in to their criminal practice, citing black and grey magic. Pictured are local preman from north east of Denpasar playing posing with water pistols.
