L. Abigail Chua, 'Madre Madonna Moderna'

38 x 49 cm

Epson Fine

Edition 1/5

$2000

Framed by chaos and commercial glow, she strides forward—takeout in one hand, stroller in the other clutched like a lifeline, eyes fixed forward. . She weaves through a city built for selfies, not strollers. Billboards scream dreams; she carries lunch and a life.

No one notices the real labor—just the neon. The turquoise tee whispers of tropical escape, but her eyes scan for the next safe step through a city that doesn’t wait. Behind her, tourists pose, phones out, oblivious. In front, a child gazing up, fan humming against summer heat. She is everywoman—provider, protector, passerby. A modern Madonna in the marketplace.

L. Abigail Chua is a project manager in the construction industry in New York City. As an immigrant, she gives a world view of her passion for visual arts through her photography “the quick shot”. Abigail’s work is about the modern world and our place in it. Light is the foundation and sets the tone of the conversation she captures in an instant, which forces the viewer to come closer to explore for more detail, or to take a step back to understand the full picture. The idea of the “perceived” and the “actual” elicit reactions of fondness that is constant. As an artist she has the unique opportunity to exemplify, subvert, and redefine these concepts.
