Bio
Air Bare was created in 2020 when it bought its first drone and took to the skies of Port Douglas in Far North Queensland, Australia. They are the mother/daughter team of Sarah and Lucy Jenkins who originated from Perth, Western Australia and where Sarah currently resides.
Lucy studied architecture at the University of Melbourne and in 2022 was awarded the Bates Smart Medal Graduate Prize for Outstanding Design for her thesis 'Service Disruption'. She now works with world-renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners in London. Sarah is an artist in the acrylic medium, finding inspiration from everyday life. They both share a passion for art, architecture, design, and photography and took the opportunity of briefly living together during the pandemic to apply their creativity. Together they draw on each other’s strengths to develop ideas to create and execute interesting perspectives and unique images from above, using drone technology.
Statement
On a recent drone photography trip to the West Australian Wheatbelt in the pursuit of salt lakes, many of the lakes were found to be dry and a brilliant white from the shimmering salt. This salt lake in this image still had a small amount of water which produced a reflection of the clouds on this warm and sunny day. Asking my travelling companion to walk out on the dry section of the lake, I flew the drone to capture the image in portrait mode to avoid sun flare. The cloud reflection was only evident once the image was taken with the footprints caused by the underlying moisture. The photograph is ethereal and tranquil, creating a liminal space where the subject appears to be suspended between earth and sky.
