Bio
Anna Nazzari is a Perth-based artist, whose practice often centres on the othering of animals through posthuman, gothic or post-apocalyptic themes. Significant past exhibitions include The Bachelor (2025), Resurface: Gothic Tales from the Indian Ocean–IOTA Festival (2024); Walyalup Waters -10 Nights in Port (2023); Strangers on the Shore–Perth Festival (2022), and Monster Theatres - Adelaide Biennial (2020). She has exhibited locally and interstate, and her collaborative and non-collaborative screen-based works have been shown at numerous international film festivals. Nazzari is collected by the Art Gallery of South Australia. In 2011, she completed a Doctorate of Philosophy (Art) on the absurd fate of gender ambiguous narratives. She currently works as a Lecturer at Curtin University’s School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry.
Statement
The composition doll in this image is a relic from the 1930s and its lifelike but not quite human appearance generates unease. With a head and body made from sawdust and glue, malfunctioning rocker eyes, a busted mouth and chipped paint, the doll bears the scars of age and time. These blemishes not only signpost the doll's longevity but give rise to a sort of uncanny valley sensation that humanity is on the brink of collapse. This feeling is amplified further through a glowing stain which reflects a distorted likeness and points to a self-reflective, introspective being with no escape from their reality.
