Artist Statement / Description of artwork
This work explores the concept of liminal spaces by photographing environments
in Perth that feel unsettling or stuck in time. In this series, I aim to evoke an uncanny feeling by transforming familiar places into something that feels strange. The liminal space aesthetic first grew through online forums and image boards in the 2000s and 2010s. It’s often described as transitional areas devoid of life, such as malls in the early morning, empty parking lots, or school hallways during summer, and is characterised by the absence of people, a frozen and unsettling appearance, and a vague sense of familiarity.
