The IRIS Award is an internationally open prize recognising new, outstanding, and compelling portraiture. The criteria for selection focuses on portraits that provoke thought, and are reflective of contemporary culture, whilst conceptually challenging conventional notions of portrait photography.

All methods of photography are welcomed, including traditional print photography, new technologies, and expanded forms of image-making.

Pippa Milne, Associate Curator, PHOTO Australia: Pippa Milne is a curator and writer from Aotearoa, New Zealand now living in Naarm / Melbourne. She is the Associate Curator with PHOTO Australia and has been working with photography since 2011. Pippa was previously Senior Curator at Monash Gallery of Art, Melbourne (now the Museum of Australian Photography, MAPh); Curator at Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne and Associate Curator of International Art at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane. Recent exhibitions Pippa has curated include Hoda Afshar: Speak the Wind (2022), Not standing still: new approaches in documentary photography (2021), Bill Henson: The light fades but the gods remain (2019).

Kate Hulett: West Australian artist, film photographer, and creative producer. Hulett won the Iris Award in 2019, and has been selected in numerous group shows and awards globally. Her interests span the surprising amongst the mundane. With a deep curiosity in people, humanity and the frivolity of life (Hulett holds a BPsych), her works often feature irony, wit and humour to soften and connect with the viewer. She has a keen interest in environmental and social justice, and generating a sense of pride and connection within the community. Her work orientates around the bigger picture and investigates actions that will improve our lived environment in the hope to inform a brighter future.

Curtis Taylor: A Martu artist who grew up between Bidyadanga in the Kimberley Region, and Parnngurr in the East Pilbara. Currently based in Perth, over the past decade Taylor has developed a distinct practice that spans sculptural installation, painting and filmmaking. Through these mediums he presents urgent narratives that speak across generations, exploring ideas about identity, language, cultural practice, and responsibility.

Graham Miller: Born in Hong Kong, 1966. Lives in Fremantle, Western Australia. Graham Miller is a photographer whose work has been exhibited internationally and throughout Australia, including the Haggerty Museum USA, Southeast Museum of Photography USA, Mt Rokko Festival Japan, Pingyao International Festival of Photography China, One Eyed Jacks Gallery UK, Recontres Photographie Internationale de Niort France, Kaunas Photo Lithuania, F/Stop Festival Leipzig Germany, Yokohama Photography Festival Japan, the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Perth Centre for Photography.

PCP regularly invites art industry leaders to assist with curating and judging awards.
